Zähringer cities

Germany / Switzerland

Villingen-Schwenningen is one of twelve cities in Germany and Switzerland that form the Zähringer cities. Today's close relationship dates back to the founding period of most of the cities. They all have in common that they belonged to the property of the Dukes of Zähringen, who, with a uniform jurisdiction and the granting of numerous rights to the cities, led a progressive government over their large estates. Most towns were even founded by the Zähringers.
